My Teammates Are Dogs, Not People: The Solitary Builder’s Most Perfect Companions
AI solves the logic, but Daon and Bao solve me.
The Real Meaning of Working Alone
The day of a solo developer is fiercely silent. When I wake up, brew a cup of coffee, and sit at my desk, my world converges into the monitor. There are no heated meetings like in my strategy consultant days, and there’s no need to discuss performance with anyone. This silence, with little to say and few people to meet, was initially "freedom," but as time passed, it began to feel like a "weight."
Life means making every decision alone and bearing the responsibility for the results alone. In this solitary race, the reason I don't completely collapse and can keep tapping on the keyboard every day is, paradoxically, that this space is not "completely alone." Behind my back, or under my feet, there are beings who always breathe with me and endure this time together.
A Teammate Who is More Perfect Because They Have No Specific Role
In truth, the teammate that helps with my actual work is AI. AI finds bugs in the code I wrote, generates complex automation scripts, and manages my schedule like a secretary. In terms of efficiency, AI is indeed the best teammate. But Daon and Bao are different.
They don't know how to code, and they have no interest in the service’s revenue metrics. Whether a feature I stayed up all night to build gets a traffic bomb or the server goes down due to an error, they just lie next to me, yawning as usual. Beings who neither help with work nor solve problems. Yet, strangely, that "doing nothing" becomes my greatest salvation.
In a relationship with a human colleague, expectations and reactions constantly go back and forth. You have to make each other understand and prove performance. But with Daon and Bao, no explanation or understanding is needed. They don't see me as a "strategist" or a "developer"; they treat me simply as "a person who is with them." That simple and pure relationship becomes the most powerful remedy that cools my head when it’s trapped in complex logic.
The Solitude Doesn't Disappear, But the State Changes
Running a solo development business sometimes brings a chilling loneliness. When doubts like "Am I doing this right?" arise, struggling alone in an empty space is more daunting than it seems. At that moment, the presence of Daon, who quietly approaches and rests his head on my knee, or Bao, who wags his tail and coaxes me for a walk, changes the weight of the air itself.
Their presence next to me doesn’t mean the loneliness completely disappears. I still code alone and make decisions alone in a quiet room. However, the state of being "completely alone" and "when someone is next to me" is fundamentally different. The sense of sharing the same space and the same time, even if we can't communicate with words. The mere fact that there is someone silently watching over this time of my struggle transforms the solo developer's space from an "isolated island" into a "cozy workshop."
Beings Who Make Me Stop Work, Creating Balance
Paradoxically, Daon and Bao increase my sustainability by disrupting my productivity. When working alone, I often forgot to eat, buried at my desk under the guise of immersion. But now, the biological rhythm of the dogs has become the standard for my work schedule.
When it's walk time, they forcibly gift me with a break. That short journey of turning off the monitor, getting in the car, and heading to the park becomes a buffer zone that forcibly calms my mind chased by urgency. If they weren't there, I would have been eroded by burnout much faster. The dogs are the strictest and most affectionate managers who teach me how to adjust my pace and how to stop in the middle to catch my breath.
Teamwork Forged by "Existence," Not Self-Esteem
During my strategist days, I tried to prove my worth through performance. If the numbers didn't come out, my value of existence wavered. But Daon and Bao’s gaze holds no such metrics. Whether I am a developer who hit the jackpot or a novice builder worried about no revenue, they wag their tails just the same and welcome me.
This unconditional support gives me a solid mind that doesn’t fluctuate. The leeway to be able to say, "It's okay because Daon and Bao are next to me," even on a day when results aren't good. This is the great power unique to companion life that no AI assistant, no human teammate can provide. We don't expect special rewards from each other. Our teamwork is perfect simply due to the fact that we guarded each other’s side today and spent it safely.
The Record of Time Endured Together
Ultimately, the essence of solo development lies in the "power to sustain," and that sustainability comes from the time endured together. The breath of Daon and the footsteps of Bao are dissolved into every single line of my service's code. Those times that quietly guarded my side, even without special events, accumulate, creating who I am now and the service I have now.
Though I have no human teammate, I am with partners who are more reassuring than anyone else. If a smart AI teammate becomes my brain, Daon and Bao become my heart, making it beat and providing the roots that prevent me from collapsing. Thanks to this unique and warm teamwork, I quietly walk the solitary developer's path today.
Conclusion: To Those Who Are Alone But Not Completely Alone
I want to ask all builders who work alone. Who is by your side? If you are continuing a very lonely battle right now, momentarily take your eyes off the monitor and look at the precious being guarding your side. Whether it's a companion animal, a small potted plant, or even a warm cup of tea cheering you on.
We can go further when we are with someone than when we are completely alone. This special journey of mine with Daon, Bao, and the clever AI teammate will continue. In this rich solitude, where I am alone but never truly alone, I intend to create a deeper service.
